Vehicles get damages everyday. Sometimes minor and sometimes more. People get hurt. Sometimes minor injuries and sometimes fatal injuries. You do not even have to be driving to get damage. you could be parked. A tree could fall through your roof or vandals can strike.
The right auto insurance will protect you from all these foreseen accidents. Natural disaster, vandalism and accidents can happen to anybody. Also most states have laws requiring liability insurance. But, liability is not nearly enough.
The liability coverage the state requires only covers the autos, property and people that we damage in an at fault accident. Often the coverage limits are only $25000. Not nearly enough to cover everything at times. Without adequate coverage we could end up in court.
If you want your vehicle, medical bills or property to be covered you need comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage will protect your damages if you are at fault. Another good coverage to add is Unisured/underinsured coverage.
Personal Injury Protection is coverage that would cover you and your passengers if you were injured in an at fault accident. It is essential to help pay the medical expenses involved in an accident. It will also cover a pedistrien if you should injury someone.
Many people who have a new car opt to purchase Gap insurance. gap insurance will protect you in case your vehicle is totaled. It is likely that your insurance will not pay enough to cover what you owe on your vehicle so this added protection is a good idea.
You should take the time to review your coverage and make sure you have enough. You should buy the best your budget will allow. Nobody needs to go in debt over an accident. If you do not have adequate coverage you should shop around to find it.
The Importance of Auto Insurance
Most States have laws regarding car insurance. The State of Texas says you must have car insurance to even get a car registered to your name. If you go without you still have to pay for damages incurred in an accident. In addition you could be fined or even get your driving privleges suspended. It is just not worth the cost!
Each State differs in what kind of covergae is mandatory. In the State of Texas they say you must have liabilty coverage of 25/50/25 minimum. This will protect the other party.
The Texas 25/50/25 means that you must have liability insurance that will cover $25000 bodily injury or death for 1 person and $50000 for 2 people. it must also pay up to $25000 for damage to property. This minimum does not protect you or your property that would be an additional coverage called Comprehensive.
If damages exceed the limits you would still be responsible for the additional expense. Many insurance companies recommend more coverage for this reason. The States minimum is just that a minimum and often not enough.
You are not required to carry Comprehensive coverage, but sometimes if you have a lien holder they require you to. As long as they remain part owner they want the vehicle protected from loss. You should add comprehensive if you would like to protect yourself as well.
If you decide to ignore the requirements you could get a big right hook to the pocketbook. How about the cost for towing and storing your vehicle. Fines that could cost as much as $350. If it is not your 1st time $650 or more is to be expected. You could even lose the privelage to driver a motor vehicle.
The State of Texas has cracked down hard on uninsured motorist, making them pay a price just to keep their license. They have what is called a surcharge that a violator must pay for up to 3 years after the violation. The “surcharge” is very costly.
It is important to maintain auto insurance. For many reason. The ones listed, plus they fact that violations increase your insurance premiums, just making it more expensive to maintain coverage. It is such a waste of your hard earned money.
