Herbal treatments are less expensive than prescription medications and offer a cost effective alternative to drugs. Herbs for anxiety treatment also have fewer side effects and the side effects they do have are usually much less severe than their drug counterparts. That’s because herbs are milder. PostHeaderIcon What Role Hope and Faith Play When You Are Depressed?

by Dr. Arturo Ovies

Although hope and depression seem to be opposite, it is possible to have hope on the future and that you will overcome depression. It’s an uphill battle, but you can win. I’ve done it, so could you.

Lets rephrase the above statement, it is imperative that you maintain hope about your future and that you will get better.

I know from experience, I have dealt with depression my entire life. Once thing I found out is that, although is quite difficult and sometimes impossible to have hope or aspirations while you are depressed, it is the only gift you can give yourself. Please don’t despair. You are not alone. Seek help.

Hope, don’t lose it and don’t allow anybody to take it away from you. Hang on to it as your life saver.

Hope and strong faith is what saved me and kept me alive. Even during my darkest moments, although excruciating at times, I learned that the hope of getting better and enjoying a full life was the main reason for me to keep living and therefore fighting to get better. It was not an easy battle but rewarding when I started getting and feeling better.

If you are a religious person, pray and keep faith. Spirituality has helped millions of people to overcome difficulties, including illnesses.

Speak to a priest, pastor, spiritual counselor, a doctor or a close friend. The main thing is not to close yourself up to the world. Please allow me to give you an advice here. Withdrawing is a “safe” place when depressed, but in the long run it makes the road to recovery slower and painful. It took me years to get this.

I know, talking of your problems is not easy, especially if you are a parent, spouse or the main provider in your family. Our culture has created the wrong belief that mental illness is something you can just brush up and move on.

How many times we’ve heard, “you are just depressed, get over, move on with your life”. If everything were as easy as that. But you and I now how painful it is to live with the cloud of depression hanging over our heads.

How blurry everything looks when depressed and how the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness don’t go away no matter how hard we try. This is where hope and faith come in.

Although impossible to comprehend, don’t try to find explanations as to why are you depressed. That is a road to nowhere, instead focus your attention and efforts on getting better and overcome this terrible mental illness.

There is a way out of depression and you are not alone. I am here for you because I know what it is to be depressed and how lonely one feels.

PostHeaderIcon Signs of Bipolar

by Ken P Doyle

Bipolar disorder symptoms can be scary, but take heart because its treatable. Bipolar disorder can be treated with the proper interventions. Usually, a combination of drug therapy and psychotherapy is used.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?

When you hear bipolar, there are two things that usually come to mind first. These are manic highs and depressive lows. A period of normality usually falls between both these extremes.

Manic Phase

In the manic phase, you may be extremely high energy, feeling very “up”, as though your brain and body were suddenly put on high speed. Your thoughts and movements are very, very quick. This can be very pleasant, and high energy, but it can also be very damaging. People in the manic phase can be very irritable with the people they love, and can do very compulsive things without thinking about it. For example, they may spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars they don’t have, simply because they “want something”, may take drugs or engage in risky behavior like promiscuous sexual behavior, and so on.

Lows: Depression

Like almost everything else, bipolar disorder also has its lows or opposites. This is a time of depression. Here there are excessive feelings of depression, low self-esteem, the inability to feel any of the pleasures of life and fatigue. The symptoms of depression here can be triggered by the guilty feelings of what you may have done in your manic state.

Types of Bipolar Disease or Disorder

There are different levels or types of bipolar. There are some who go through the phases of mania and depression very quickly while others go through it pretty slowly. The ones who go through the phases fast are constantly going up and down. From personal relationships to work life, these severe mood swings can impact life in a negative way.

Warning Signs

If you or someone you love suddenly has trouble sleeping and has a lot of excess energy for no apparent reason, be aware that this may be the beginning of a manic phase. Get to a doctor and get diagnosed as soon as you can. It’s much easier to treat the disorder early on than it is later. Not only can delaying treatment cause symptoms to get worse and even cause psychosis, but this type of disorder is very wearing on loved ones.

Seek Early Treatment

It’s best to nip it in the bud as early as you can if you notice problems. This is because even though the depressive phase arguably feels worse to the person with the bipolar disorder, the manic phase can actually be far more damaging to friends and family members.

Why? Bipolar disorder can cause very distinct mood swings that make interpersonal relationships difficult. More than that, the mania associated with bipolar disorder can cause very irresponsible behavior that has lasting consequences. For example, hyper-sexual acting out can cause irreparable damage to marriages, while excessive shopping, reckless driving, and other similar activities can cause financial difficulties.

Get Help – Don’t Be Afraid

Finally, don’t be afraid to get help if you think you or someone else may be suffering from bipolar disorder. It’s true that there is still a stigma attached to bipolar disorder and other similar diseases, but ignoring it is not going to make it go away or get better. Get help for yourself or your loved one as soon as you see that there is a problem. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll prevent lasting problems and consequences that can come from untreated bipolar disorder, too.
