The Brothers Bloom is a brand new movie about the world’s best con men. This new comedy features an award winning group of actors that bring a much needed sense of fun to this type of film. The brothers decide to embark on a final ‘super con’ before they finally decide to hang up their spurs and coast in to retirement.

The world of the Brothers Bloom is never quite as it might first appear, a life lived by deceit has seen them liberate vast fortunes from their victims over many years. The time has come though for them to embark on their biggest con ever, to swindle a single Jersey heiress out of some of her fortune, and that’s where the fun begins.

The Bloom Brothers have relied on each other for all their lives, ever since they were children taken in to foster care homes, right through to the present day as wealthy conmen, everything is shared. I can’t wait to download The Brothers Bloom for free as this seems like a fun film that will get me laughing real easily – I will start my search for links very soon.

Of the two brothers, one of them, Bloom, wants to quit the industry and settle down but he agrees to take part in one last con when he develops a relationship with Penelope played by Rachel Wiesz. The two form a genuine bond though, and Bloom becomes increasingly reluctant to use his conman skills on her.

Rian Johnson both wrote and directed The Brothers Bloom, as he had done his previous two offerings Brick (2006) and Looper, a sci-fi movie set in the present day. Fans of Rachel Weisz are in for a real treat, as the luscious Ms. Weisz melts my heart as always. Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo play the Brothers Bloom, and as a pairing they work really well.

The movie is due for a limited release on May 15th, and a release to a much wider audience a couple of weeks later on the 29th. If you are a fan of the romantic comedy you will really ‘get’ this film, so it would be a shame if you let it be one of those movies that you catch up with in a year or so when it has been out on DVD for ages – it is worth catching first time round.

If you used to shoot film and made the switch to digital at some point, chances are you still have leftover film lying about. I had half a fridge door full of all kinds of film, some expired, some on the verge, and decided I needed to do something fun with it.

April 26 is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, so I thought we’d talk about pinhole cameras in this article.

Pinhole photography is nothing new – the basic optical principles are mentioned in 5th century BC texts from China, and the first documented photos taken with a pinhole camera are from the mid-1800s. You can make a pinhole camera from just about anything, and people do, but in most cases, you have to load and unload the film in total darkness, which can be tricky. If you do want to give pinhole photography a try, but prefer not to hide in a closet to put the film in, check out these cameras:

Pinhole Blender Cameras The film cameras from Pinhole Blender look like cookie and tea tins (with 2 dials on top) and come in small, medium and large format (35mm, 120 and 4×5). The small and medium format cameras can be loaded in daylight, but the 4×5 has to be done in total darkness. The small and medium format cameras come in two configurations: with one or three pinholes and the large format with three or six. Fun, easy to use and inexpensive ($20-$80), these are great cameras for those who want to try their hand at pinhole photography.

Holga The plastic, inexpensive Holga cameras first saw the light of day in Hong Kong in 1982, and quickly gained an almost cult-like status among photographers all over the world. The Holga pinhole cameras come in two sizes: small and medium format (for 35mm and 120 film). The 35mm version has an aperture of f/175, the medium format f/192. Both have only one shutter speed – B – which stands for Bulb and means that the shutter stays open for however long you press the shutter. Thankfully, they have standard cable release and tripod threads and come with (optional) cable releases, both of which are essential to shooting with these cameras. You advance the film at your own whim – make panoramas, double (or triple) exposures, or shoot “normal” one-frame images – it’s up to you. The deluxe package, which includes either camera, 10 rolls of film and a cable release is $100.

Pinhole Resource’s Hexomniscope For a truly unique pinhole experience, check out the Hexomniscope from Pinhole Resource. This 6-pinhole, 6-shutter, round camera uses 120 film and produces 6 overlapping 60 degree images. The shutters are individually operated, but have a single release. At $1,590, it’s not cheap, but the results are stunning.

Digital Pinhole SLR All you need to use your digital SLR for pinhole photography is an extra lens cap and a drill. Find the exact center of the lens cap and drill, from inside the cap out, as tiny a hole as you possibly can. Use the lens cap instead of a lens and voila! Pinhole camera.

So What Is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day? It’s a worldwide annual event, held on the last Sunday in April, to encourage people to take some time off from technology and get back to basics for a day. You can use any pinhole camera (homemade is fine) but you have to take the pictures on that particular day (April 26 this year). Then upload your photos (so if you use film, you need to have it developed and scanned) and submission form, and if the “Coordinating Team” selects any of your photos, they will be displayed online.

Americans love movies. One of our favorite pastimes is sitting at home, or in a darkened theater, and watching the latest blockbuster hit. Personally, I prefer watching movies at home. We have got a comfortable set up, I can watch whatever I want, whenever I want if my wife agrees. And best of all, there are no interruptions from inconsiderate fellow movie-goers.

But that extensive DVD collection is not cheap, so I have discovered a few ways to add to my collection without breaking the bank.

The easiest way to do this is to check out the clearance shelves at your local discount chain stores. They tend to get the lowest prices and want to move inventory. Often you can get movies for under $5. Granted, they will not be the latest releases, but you can round out your collections with classics at these low prices.

You can also buy used DVDs. There are used DVD stores popping up around the country. These stores are especially popular around colleges and universities. Not only can you buy DVDs here, but often you can sell any of your unwanted DVDs as well. The prices are very low and the selection is large.

DVD rental stores are also a great place to look movies. Often they promote themselves as never being out of stock for new releases. That means they buy many more copies of these movies than they will need to keep on hand once the initial rush for the movie is over. So, if you can wait a bit for that blockbuster you really want to see, you can often get it at a substantial discount a few weeks after it has been released on disk.

Online retailers also often offer DVDs at lower prices. Sometimes they will offer a combo-pack, two or three movies at a reduced rate. Often you will get a movie you have not heard of in the pack, but this is a great way to see movies you would not otherwise check out. There is usually a theme to the combo pack: same actor, same genre, same director.

Warehouse stores are another great source for discount DVDs. You can often get movies here for a few dollars less than you would pay retail, but the selection is often limited.

Finally, if you simply cannot wait to get the latest release on DVD, many stores offer discounts up front. You will have to go to their websites to see what they are offering. If you do a little digging, you can often get what you are looking for at a lower price.

There are usually more bad movies than great ones, but how exactly does a movie destined for greatness become such a horrible disaster? Nobody intends to make an awful movie, sometimes it just happens through a combination of bad decisions, or ultimately poorly received by the public.

The bigger the movie production becomes, the more complex it is, and the greater the possibilities of ending up with a terrible and badly produced movie become. The director is supposed to oversee the whole production and have a single vision of what it should be, but sometimes things beyond their control can turn everything bad. Often the solution can simply be overlooked as everything spirals out of control.

These movies can still go on to have moderate success at the box office, a bad movie doesn?t necessarily mean no business for the studio involved. The public will still pay to go and see these movies at the theatre, especially of Hollywood throws enough money into advertising it.

Put all that extra effort and money into the advertising and you just might get a few tickets sold. The lesson here is that if you advertise hard and fast, you will be able to sell a bad movie to the public and make a reasonable amount of money from it, before the public realise and word spreads about it.

But the bigger question, if you have just spent a lot of money making a movie just for it to turn out bad, why would you throw even more money in its direction with the hope of getting it back again? Hollywood has always thrown good money after bad. Get the best trailer you can possibly squeeze from the movie out in theatres and on tv, and you can make the movie look ten times better than it actually is.

Build everything up about the film to be many times bigger than it really is. Don?t undersell as a simple love story. Sell it as an action-packed love story where the two characters are extremely good looking and the movie is full of action.

Get all the best scenes from the entire movie and put them into a thirty second trailer. If you do this quickly and sell it hard, then you’ve got yourself a rush to the theatres when it premiers.

Everything can rest on the success of a movie, and studios and reputations can hang from a single thread over this. For this reason, careers can be completely ruined and many people connected with the production can loose their jobs.

The success of a movie is certainly not guaranteed in this business. Even the top people in Hollywood cannot figure out a magic formulae to the success in the movie industry.
